Imitation leather is better for sewing as it is not as flexible, but you can also use real leather. It is important that it has a uniform thickness of 0.5 to 0.8 mm. The pipe I use is made of soft, unalloyed steel (S235JR) with a diameter of 10mm and a wall thickness of 1mm. It can be bent very easily with a simple bending device. To check the angles I use a CAD drawing at a 1:1 scale.
