55 chevy pro street

Post by Mike Casey »

Here is a 55 chevy pro street i have been working on. For some reason, this one was a WICKED bad fiberglass body. Has a ton of bubbles under the gel coat so lots of stuff to fill. Spent about 8 hours fixing the body today and probably have quite a few more hours left. Best part is, i almost completed the molds for the windows. I did a test pull and the windows look good. I need to make a few small mods to the mold and I will have a nice set to use on the body. Gotta LOVE having a vacuum former!!! Great tool to have! :D

What kinda project you got going with the 55? Interesting!!!

I don't know how you'd EVER be able to form clear windows for one of those bodies without vacuum-forming them! The compound-curves would be almost impossible to replicate by hand with a flat sheet of clear plastic.

Of course, your street GTP is going to be ANOTHER one that'll need a window mold made, especially with that big bubble-front windshield.

Great that you have a vacuum-former! Next to a vinyl cutter (and, of course, my trusty, crusty, rusty Dremel) I think a Vacuum-forming machine would be a TREMENDOUSLY handy toll to have!

I'm Officially jealous!

I have one of these bodys and it is also full of "air Pockets".

If you have the glass forms built to reproduce them and the price is right (remember I am a working man)
I would be interested in a set as I am also finishing up this 55 in a few weeks. Ours is a 1960s gasser!

Thanks!

yea juiced, just remind me in a week or two. Gotta work the mold a bit to make them a bit better and to make them clearer. too many sand marks now, but it was just a test too. Mold wont take much more work.

did another pull on the windows last night after working the mold a bit more. Much better this time around. I suspect the next pull will be it. So far, they have been usable, but trying to get the best that i can with what i have.

I painted a Q-Scale Chevy like that about ten years ago... but it was Lexan. Lots of fun masking off all that Chrome! They put the pic on Alclad Lacquer's (the makers of the Chrome paint I used) website.

I've always been curious about the Alclad, Ive never tried it...I know that you have to spray it over black, and dust is your enemy......enlighten me..

sorry... didnt mean to hijack your thread

Well, I'm not an expert on the use of Alclad on the OUTSIDE of anything (the Lexan body is painted on the INSIDE), but, yes, as I understand it, they recommend spraying it over black.

For the outside, though, I'd be looking at the Alsa Chrome products:

This looks like the pro-deal to me.

I'm familiar with Alsa. Alclad is the original "chrome paint" . I'm just fishing for some real world experience........I've seen some exceptional work done with it.

i have a couple front and rear window sets available. They are not perfect, but look pretty good. I dont think i will be getting perfection with what i have. $25 shipped for a front and rear combo.
