Improving the Silver Dollar

Hallo friends of the Silver Dollar.

I just bought one. The gears were in perfect condition.
One bearing was totally destroyed. I ask myself why?

In my oppinion, the original bearing "NICE 1602 DC" is
not the right one for this application.

In an worm gear you have high axial forces espacially if you run them in Dragsters.

To handle these forces you need a Thrust bearing or a spherical roller thrust bearing
(like you can see in the third picture).

I build the Silver Dollar in CAD so lets see if we find a soultion for that problem.

Is there someone who made the same experiences or got any idea?

I just wish the input shaft was bigger than 1/4".

This is the next design fault and because of the flat area it´s in the end much smaller than 1/4".

These are two samples what happens to this area in case of high Forces...
It is very important to use two large Allen Screws with flat end for mounting.

Very interesting and good to know. I am following high quality your work.

...I found two new bearings that fit the Silver Dollar and make it possible to separate the axial and radial Forces.

Notice: The direction of the high axial force depends on the direction of Rotation.

I added a few screws and two gaskets to fill the gearbox with oil.

Filling with oil is a good idea. I have a Skellenger that's been modified (not by me) and filled with oil.

I think oil is much better than grease in this case. Every Time I opened a gearbox filled with grease, the grease is everywhere but on the gears...

Very nice,is that your car? Photo can't be enlarged, are you saying the line goes to an oil reserve or is it for a vent?

No, it is not my car. I found this picture and wondered why there is this tube running to the point where you normally refill oil to the gearbox. In my oppinion that only makes sense when you loose a lot of oil...
