Belt axle help

Post by Lovedr »

Hey Guys

I got these 2 GN cars and one is a belt drive. They are very well built one says GM Motorsports. They are extremely well built and may even be better than my Delora GN. Very impressed. The one with the belt drive the rear axle seems way too short to put the belt sprocket and hub. Please see the pic. Are these suppose to have 2 axles, one short and one long and the belt sprocket clamping both axles? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Mike! Any idea on the rear axle setup? I'm sure you've had one of these belt drives before. LOL

is that supposed to be IRS? I suspect your culprit is in the middle.

Hard to see in pics, but is that supposed to be a solid axle or split in the middle for IRS? With a drive cup and dog bone?

Yes mike, it's a solid axle with NO dog bones. The axle shaft seems to be about 2 to 3 inches short. I'll take more pics and post them.

The axle length is 11 3/4 imches. Is it normal to have 2 axles one long and one short coupled together with the big drive pully? It makes no sense.here are some more pics and thanks for the help

no its not normal. Something odd is going on there. Was the car in parts when you got it?

The front end was off but the rear drive train and axle was on but the drive pully and left hub and wheels were off.

It should be a solid axle 1 piece but someone use 2 pieces to make the axle long enough to work.

Thanks anytimerc, I agree. I was just wondering if there was any logic behind it because the guy that owned these cars made parts and I got a book of sketches and papers of setup down to shock oil and everything setup u can think of.

Aluminum axles are hard to find. I use cromolly tube and polish it down so the bearing slide on. I also do the same for fiberglass axles.

I have actually done that in a pinch. So it's not uncommon to see that once in a while. When you don't have a long enough piece you use what you got.

For axle material try www.mcmaster.com reasonable prices and shipping. You can get aluminum or steel shafting from them and many other goodies. Awesome looking cars.
