I know what I'd do...I'd get a strip of G10 (garolite) Fiberglass from McMaster Carr and glass it onto the bottom of the body. You could use three additional pieces to reinforce the rocker panel and those would allow the attached lower strip to conform to any side curvature in the body.

That oughta work! I'm not sure about the "grades" of the G10, I always just got the least expensive (kinda tupperware green-ish) level for fabricating wings and spoilers brake discs and stuff.
Is the space between the wheel wells 24" or less so that it can be one piece?
