Homebuild
Hey guys.
A few of you will be familiar with my project form other corners of the internet, but I thought I'd put it up here as well.
My first build ever and actually my first RC car full stop, so it's been an interesting journey so far.
I'm not sure if you'd callit 1/4 or 1/5 scale, but it's going to be pretty big, with 200mm dia wheels and 47cc chainsaw motor.
I'm trying to fabricate most of the parts as I go and my aim to begin with is to build something that moves.
Later on I'll worry about things like suspension, diff etc.
See what you think.

Re: Homebuild
Thanks, yeah I've been thinking about the Toro gearbox.
A couple of people have used them with good results.
am also keen to try an angle grinder setup, as it has the gear reduction alreaby built in.

G`day DVP
Have you managed to find any of the Toro drives over here? I havent called but internet searches only ever show them available OS.
If you want to try a angle grinder gear drive go to just about any medium sized fabrication shop and ask them if they have any blown up ones, we have about 6 of them at work that we keep for spare parts when one blows up. Take some pics with you and you might get one or two for free (or a small contribution to the beer fund lol)

Re: Homebuild
Would be good to if there was some pics/ link to show how the grinder one is made up/ put on the axle as I think I can get an old grinder or 2 that just blew up
Hrem, Yes.. I see.

G`day ACC
Go here viewtopic.php?f=18&t=310
Stoney has built an incredible piece of machinery and his diff is easily modified into a simpler one and would suit a grinder setup well.
Cheers

Re: Homebuild
Troppo -I haven't searched for the Toro box but I'm sure it would be available somewhere here in Oz.
Probably start asking around at your little local mower repairmen.
The old fellas have a lot of goodies in their sheds, but aren't always keen on getting rid of them.
Acc - This is the only example (Part from Stoney's diff) I've seen where a grinder has been used in an RC car.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6A2AuYL5jfI
Skip forward to 1:20
I have a couple of busted grinders in the shed and had a go at attaching a bicycle sprocket to one and it turned out ok, but is rather heavy.
Mainly because of the parts I was using though.
I think the easier way to do it is with the sprocket and chain off the grinder head on to the rear axle.
Work out what reduction the grinder has, then use sprockets to suit.
Depends on your skill and workshop.

Re: Homebuild
If you guys are serious about purchasing a TORO gear box let me know... I don't think they ship to your location... You send me a certified check/money order and I'll purchase them and send them to you... I can send stuff world wide through my business account fairly cheap... If this sounds good for you just send me an PM/Email on it and I'll back to you with my address... Here are a few PDF's on the TORO gear box, & standard grinder parts/gears..
Woops!! Looks like the TORO pdf's are to large to post here... Send me an email and I'll send them your way....

Re: Homebuild
Cheers for the offer Stoney.
I'm not chasing one righ now, but Troppo might be interested.
I might take you up on that offer some other time though if I find something cheaper in the US than here.

Re: Homebuild
Alright, I'm back to building this car again after having been sidetracked for a while with another build.
Starting pretty much from scratch with this one.
Just a couple of pics of the transmission here.

Re: Homebuild
Well that other clutch bell was warped....
I must have pinched it in the vice or something, dunno.
It wasn't always like that.
Not to worry, I have a backup and here's some pics of the new setup.
