How'd you get started???

I was introduced into 1/4 scale wayyyyy back when , WCM was making cars with full interiors and the engines were front mounted with belt driven clutches and final drive.......I had "Waldo" (full racer figure with helmet/firesuit) in the drivers seat, belted in and holding onto the steering wheel made from a peanut butter jar lid......Ken Higdon was the person to blame for all this...He sold WCM and Raco cars in Vegas....For the longest time he and I were the only ones with 1/4 scale cars...We'd race our 1/8 & 1/10 cars at the Silverbowl Raceway then do demos with the 1/4 scales.....Soon others joined in and the Super Nationals were put on by Ken and they came...From all over the world, THEY CAME...Germany, England and Italy I can remember... Italy even demo 1/4 r/c road bikes one time...We would put board jumps on the oval/road course and race the Off road trucks on it...Then they would have a "Jump Off" to see who could fly the farthest....Talk about destroying trucks!!!!!
I have had the pleasure of racing against The Cheeks, Love, Greco, Rahe's, Skellenger, Bill Brown (New Mexico) and the crew from New Mexico....and maybe even Ace......Best of all has been Ron Schoeb, who I ALWAYS liked to stuff in the wall...LOL...The guys from Vegas, Bud Cort was an oldie, and California had tons of racers like John Ferguson and Tim McMillan, Arizona had bunches too like Arrow, the guys who built beautiful Sprint and Super Mods during the hot times when there were WCM, Raco, Them AZ guys(Arrow), Lance Love, George Brazil (New Mexico) and a father/son team from Back East all making Sprint cars and Super Mods.....and many more...Most everyone would help each other then because it was more of a party than anything else...
Been a loooong time since I thought about this stuff..... Thanks for the memories....

The memories keep coming......
Outlaw Camaro bodies, wedge dirt late model bodies, racing on dirt (I loved it) in San Bernadino (?) Ca...Gus Gustovson.....Those Camaros and I think a Ford Probe body were fast w/ 2hp motors and tuned pipes, 4" rears.....Edelbrock and their Sprint cars w/Kawasaki motors..... Racos w/gyros.....Does anyone remember concourse with driver figures??? Cheeks WCM Super w/driver and steering wheel that moved w/front tires....Sprint wings that moved by r/c like the real ones...Higdon w/Pee Wee Herman as a Sprint Car driver.... Pee Wee spoke Japanese after a bad flip over the wall one night ....Vegas boys getting busy crash testing some ruff driving Ca boys...and vis-versa.....QSARA Camaro pace car w/lights...QSARA club as a whole...a whole buncha crazies that is....My Arrow Super w/Raco Indy car rear wing instead of the Sprint car top wing.....Sprints and Supers w/tuned pipes....GN's with tuned pipes.....Loved them....Long pipe???or short??? fat/skinny???? How long was the track on groove??? Ahhh decisions, decisions....
Sitting in the pits watching a Sprint race and having to kick block a car that flipped over the barrier straight at me....Talking to Ron Schoeb on the drivers stand while we raced, 'cause I knew it would mess him up ( worked for a while anyways).....

The Italian Bikes (can't remember the name) had both 2 stroke and 4 stroke models running....I like the sound of the 4 stroke...
That makes me wonder what happened to the Q Scale 4 stroke Honda truck class??? If they had kept them on gas instead of alky I think they would have made it ...and they sounded way kewl..... Would make a nice class differential between GN and Sportsman.... I know the price would be another motor but, it sure would be the best sounding class IMHO....
OOOPS...Guess this should go in the motor discussion area...

The 1/4 scale bike from Italy was the DWA Commando. If anyone on here has any parts, pictures, brochures, magazine articles, literature or whatever .... I'm the guy who'll buy it all off you. Yes, I know I'm nuts :)

Kevin you are nuts.... then again I am too :D
I was introduced to 1/4 scale many years ago at the RC show in pasadena. Back then I lived in Massachusetts and I came to CA to visit my grandparents. I fell in love with the 1/4 scale cars when I saw them run and the size..... oh yes the size! I was really into RC but was just a kid and did not have enough money to buy the big stuff. Many years went by and finnaly I had money to spend on my first large scale car. I found a guy that sold me a Raco supermod 2 and supermod (jac rabbit) never ran and never had gas in them. Heck the supermod was not even built yet! I paid $500 for the pair!!!! After that many cars came and went. Now none go, I keep them all. One time like a retard I traded a PBS gtp car with a PBS aluminum gear box in it. PBS only sold 5 cars!!!!! Dang that was stupid!! This will NOT happen again!

Gulp and ouch!
Car wise I only have the 1/5 scale FG stuff but size does count :) and it's a shame the 1/4 scale cars are not so popular these days. My wife and I recently relocated from Toronto back to Dubai and the only thing I could fit in a suitcase was one of my 1/4 scale DWA bikes. I'm hoping to get the rest of my bike collection shipped here some time in September.
Would really love a 1/4 scale car someday, maybe I'll keep my eye on Ebay as Christmas aproaches and see if I can get the missus to stump up the cash for a 1/4 scale GP something or other, or failing that I'll have a go at Santa and see if he feels like springing for one.

One car I just remembered was Quick Draw...Beautiful Sprint cars and if I remember right, they had a very unique stock car offering that used a "channel" main frame....I only remember seeing advertisements for the stock car...Don't think I ever ran against one...They also made great pipes for all cars.......

Showa, I just got one of their sprint cars. It needs a full restoration. It uses the skellenger QC rear. I cant wait to get it up and running again. I have the pipe for it and also a carbon fiber tail for it.

They are great cars....I would also try to find a Phoenix Arrow Super or Sprint....They were all very nice made and great handling cars....I believe they all ran the Q.C. rear...Too bad someone doesn't make a new Q.C. out of the modern plastics to cut costs some...Or make one that incorporates a 1/5 scale diff in it .....HMMMMMM I get one or two free if anyone uses the idea....LOL

Wasn't there a Sprint car made by "Alves" ??? Only for a short time I think...If I remember right he ran a double belt drive system like the WCM....
Oh and one year the Super Nats were on a pretty short track (King 8 Hotel lot) and the Raco Supers ran foam tires (I think all we had then was foam) that were cut down so far that they were dragging the chassis after one race....I think that was a reason for minimum tire diameter rule after that...
Going to California and watching Raco driver/employee Mike White practice on a DIRT oval....Great show of sideways driving and massive power in that Jackrabbit he had....
The Albq. gang, lead by George Brazil would show at the Super Nats with DIRT still on their cars....
Try racing on pavement with bicycle tread glued to a foam tire....Bad experiment...
Racing with air filled BRP Goodyears....
NO TIRE RULES except for min/max wheel/tire size...
Tuned pipes....(I liked them)
Driver figures & window nets....
Custom car covers made by Georgeann (sp? sorry) Love...
Raco super mod cars with sparkplug thru a helmet for a "driver figure"...

WCM motor positions:
1. Front under hood
2. Rear of main cage
3. ANYWHERE in-between.....
There was a whole evolution of motor placement over the years....
You guys should have seen the "Super Mod" Ron Schoeb made....It was full left side off-set with a Skellenger rear .....Super Mod style front and top wings....One of the perttiest cars ever....I think he still has the frame....I believe we were still running tuned pipes then too....

Racing with aluminum rims...
"chromed" plastic Raco wheels...
Road trips with Ron Schoeb, Ken Higdon, Bud Cort, and Dwayne Neff...Man what trips...LOL...Remeber; What happens in Vegas......
The origional Super Nationals ran ALL (1/10, 1/8, 1/4) scales both on road and dirt all week....To include Moody nitro 1/8 Sprint cars (fantastic looking)...
Gene Surrett (sp?) (RIP) building an rc tool box with spare 1/4 parts....
1/4 scale pan chassis cars....(PRC ???)

Raco showing up for a west coast race with what seemed like 50 tires....
Jon Rahe borrowing a tire from me because it hooked up real good that day.......
Me borrowing one of his......
Guys loaning eachother parts and help to get cars ready and safe for races, even if it meant they might beat you in the main.....
I really miss the after race impromptu races that Ron Schoeb, me, and a few others would have after racing all night already....
