I just purchased a small 3d printer and handheld scanner to play with. Its pretty cool technology and almost easy to use. So far I am very impressed with the results. I want to finish off a couple details on some qscale cars I have and I hope to accomplish that with these tools.

Wow, is that printer big enough to make a 1/4 scale car body or maybe in sections? Did you input the data to create what we're seeing? mike can you give full detail from price to how long it takes to print etc.

This printer will only do 6x6 parts. Printer is about 1k and the scanner is 300 bucks. It's all made by cubify. They also have a much larger printer. Time depends on print quality setting, size, etc. the figure of my son took 3 hrs.

Its not as easy as they show it to be. But it does work. Just a little finicky and takes some practice. I can now scan a head in one shot. But before it was very frustrating. Its better with bigger objects then small.

I plan to start scanning full size car parts and printing them out for my quarter scales.

The material is really hard and you can adjust how solid it is as well. You can also use ABS which I have not tried yet. There is some playing around to do with this thing to get good results. But nothing to worry about. I am very satisfied with it and am actually going to go pick up a much larger one right now. Its the PRO model and can do something the size of a basketball. Its a really fun hobby so far. I can't wait to do even more with it.

The gears would not be usable, however I expect a center section should be! We will see!

Nice machine! I have been experimenting with this tech for a minute now! Have watch it drop in price and get better! The pla is good stuff , hard and can be used to make molds etc. Abs is better , but you need a heated bed so the abs wont warp. This machine doesnt have a heated bed but a controlled temp cell. Workin on 1/4 scale custom bodies! The machines are too small print wise and bigger ones are just expensive. To have it professionally printed expensive! Solution! Cut the 1/4 scale file into four, print each piece then glue back together and make mold!

Both of these printers do a nice job with ABS. The big one can even do nylon. Very impressive. Printing a rear in rough draft mode and looking good so far!!!
