The skellenger axle tube on my recently acquired WCM is pretty short and the rear wheels do not fill the wheel walls. I want to replace with a longer one if that's possible. My question is, where can I find a axle tube of a longer length? I k now the diameter is 1/2" and a tube 14 to 15 inch long would work better. Are these aluminum rods or steel rods or something else? Thanks in advance.

You can pretty much use any 1/2 stock. Aluminum, chromolly, titanium, whatever. The best is centerless ground stock, but standard stock will work too. You may just have a tighter fit in the bearings.

You could also just use standard 1/2'' seamed tube, Then grind down the seam at the end where the bearing rest.. That;s what i did on my rear end housing tubes

Got my shipment of alloy rods from onlinemetals.com yesterday and finally decided to use the 7075-T651 rod as the axle tube. I had to sand just a tad off the entire rod to get everything to fit properly. But with a tensile strength of 83,000 psi, it's almost twice that of 6061-T6. But then again, this axle would most likely be in a shelf-queen, so those numbers are just that, numbers.

Using regular stock can really suck. Especially when you go into the side covers with the bearings. You usually need to hammer things together. With centerless you wont need to do that. they will fit very nice.

I called and talked to Kelly. Centerless is the best, but there was a minimum charge of $100. So I'm going to Mcmaster-carr. Case hardened steel with all the same tolerances costs about $6.50 for one 1/2' x 12" shaft.

I got my axle shift the other day from Mcmaster-carr and it's very nice. Hardened steel to .030" deep. It fit like a glove, no problems. very nice shine came in a plastic wrap with a plastic protective sleeve. At about $6.50 plus shipping.
