Steel "41 Willys

Post by sandcrab »

I started on a "41 Willys in 1/4 scale as a vehicle to show the 1/3 scale smallblock I built. The first engine I put together was poured in cast iron. I have an aluminum in the works which will have a blower and this will be the car for it.
This is the start of the buck. I built an english wheel and formed some preliminary pieces for the front fender that looked decent so decided to build a complete form of the car.

I also picked up some 8" go kart tires and cast and machined a pair of Dragmaster mags.

Thanks guys, I think it will be a fun project.

I mocked up the buck with the aluminum V8 block and blower. The scale difference is starting to show and will require a couple of modifications. I expect I'll have to pour a low profile manifold to lower the blower so it won't look so top heavy. I thought I would be able to run a hood with cutaway sides but unless I am able to lower the engine the valve covers are too wide.

It is 1/3 scale and creates the issue with the engine in that a 6/71 cannot be used with an HE distributor because of clearance. Smaller diameter points unit or a mag will be required.

Sorry Emilio, I don't have any experience at making video or posting.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0KtL2hotCY shows the cast iron engine at the GoodGuys nationals in Pleasanton, but I didn't record it or post it.

Started some bead roller work on the trunk lip and started using clecos to hold it to shape. There is still bead roller work on the sides that needs to be done before I can weld them together.

The rear window is a test of the bead roller setup, but I have decided to make a punch and die so they will both be the same.

I also welded up the door jambs.

Thanks guys. but reviewing some of Emilio's video finds humbles me. There is some amazing modeling being done in 1/4 scale.

I did cast the die for the rear windows and was able to move the poorer bead rolled frame to a better position on my test piece. Lots of hammer work and almost wore it out, but the two windows are the same size and centered.
