when it comes down to it, pools and 5 gallon buckets cause more drownings then guns cause kids to have accidents. And more people have guns then pools... or buckets for that matter.

With that said, storing a loaded gun in your couch is not the best place... LOL.

For anyone that may be concerned, I can assure you that we are exceptionally gun safe (as Mike has said). The kids do NOT have access to the guns. They are locked up. They are not loaded. We don't store them in sofa cushions or on shelves or on the floor or in the kitchen sink, etc. We have all taken safety classes. We go over gun safety before, during and after shooting. We even discuss it occasionally at the dinner table. We answer any and all questions the kids have. They have been told that if they ever want to see one of the guns, we will stop whatever we are doing and show them. This way, they can see them in a safe way and they never feel they have to try to sneak a peek. The majority of the stories I have heard are not a shock. When someone says they kept a loaded shotgun behind the bedroom door, I'm not surprised there was an accidental shooting. It is common sense. Keep the things locked up and unloaded. It's as simple as that and always treat the gun as if it is loaded. We know perfectly well our guns are empty when we go to clean them, but we always, always, always check first. I really want to emphasize that we are almost fanatical about gun safety. We love each other way too much to cut corners. I was terrified of guns before and was adamant we wouldn't have any in the house. At one of the Neighborhood Watch meetings, a sheriff actually told me I should buy a gun. Law enforcement is being laid off here in California and they are letting 30 something THOUSAND inmates out of prison due to overcrowding and budget constraints. I took that seriously and went to Mike and we talked about it. Once I tried shooting at some local places, I bought a gun. I took it to a safety class where I shot about 160 rounds through it over the course of a few hours. I learned a ton and now I have a respect for firearms rather than a nearly paralyzing fear. I highly recommend the class for anyone, but I think it helps to take your own gun rather than borrow one. Also, if any of you men out there decide to buy your wife a gun, DON'T PICK IT OUT FOR HER!!!!!!! Mike understood the importance and let me select my own gun. It made all the difference in the world. Okay, enough of my whining. I wanna go to the range now though. Sigh.

Have you ever considered moving to a conservative state? There are many states that still believe in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Of course, lower taxes and the ability to carry unabated are an added bonus.

YES we have. Unfortunately we are slaves to our profession. The work is too good to leave and the kids are at the age where they want to finish out school. it is our dream though to move to another state... into the country.

I totally get what you are saying about trying to load a gun in the heat of the moment, but I just don't feel safe having a loaded gun in the house with a teenager. They are prone to emotional outbursts and it isn't worth the risk to me. We have other safety measures in place, so the gun is more of a last ditch effort than a first line of defense (at least in my mind). Once the kids are older, I'll keep one loaded, but I assure you it will still be locked up and not shoved in between sofa cushions or stored under my pillow. Anyone would be insane to try to break into this house anyway. The dogs alone would be a nightmare.

I'm so sorry to hear that sad story. What a tragedy! I was expecting a story about an accidental shooting though. This was intentional. Horrible, but intentional. I don't care how bad things get, I promise I will never kill myself or anyone I love. Heck, I'll never kill anyone period (unless they are trying to kill me first and I have no other choice). I can't understand why your cousin's husband took so many lives. As bleak as things looked at that moment, things will always get better. So, so sad. I'm really sorry for your loss. I can see why you have issues about keeping guns in the house.

Mike told me about you, but I did not read any of his PMs. Thank you so much for what you are sending. I was truly surprised when Mike told me. Thank you, thank you!

I love shooting, but I'm so incredibly frustrated by the gun laws in California. I fell in love with the look of a certain gun, but I don't believe it is legal in California (at least not in the caliber I want). I don't see why I can get it in a larger caliber and a different color. What does color have to do with anything????? I know, the manufacturers have to get each model certified and it probably isn't worth the money to get every color combo registered. I keep trying to tell myself that I wouldn't want it anyway since I haven't been able to handle one. Maybe it's too small or too heavy or too big or too something. Stupid laws.

My next one is a Desert Eagle 50 cal. Not legal to purchase new here in CA, but can do a FTF purchase. People have them, just gotta find one. I need that stopping power. I did not like the way the paper target was looking at me last week... :) LOL!!!!

Picked up my baretta last tuesday. I was so excited, i picked it up on the way home, took it apart, cleaned it, installed the wood grips and grabbed a box of 9mm and went direct to the range. Everyone in the family loved it. Even our 9yr old son shot it and thought it was bad ass. We are going to spend some quality time with it this weekend.

You THINK you'll get to shoot it, but I suspect the kids and I will suck up most of the ammo before you get a chance (like last time). That Beretta is FUN!!!!!!!

I love useless toys. Who doesnt? :) The more useless... the better. I love the stupid looking stuff. I love the regular stuff too. But for example... Desert Eagle 50 cal with gold plating. Sure its the stupidest looking thing ever and is a gangster gun, but damn, that is just too funny not to have.

The cop video was pretty dam funny. Obviosly either fake or he is a complete retard, because with the mag out and the slide back, there is no confusion if there is a round in the chamber. If the video was real, julie likes to call that "natural selection"

I'm impressed. Not only is that a giant firearm, but the woman didn't hit herself in the head with it. I'm thinking there might be a slight difference in recoil between that beast and a .22LR. Hardly noticeable, right?

What do you think of the Springfield Armory 1911 in 9mm? It seems there is a lot of debate about 9mm versus .45 acp.

As for the videos, I can't believe the cop shot himself in the leg. If you have taken out the magazine and looked inside, how do you shoot yourself? I can't figure out why he had his finger on the trigger. NEVER put your finger on the trigger unless you are going to fire the weapon. NEVER. NEVER. NEVER. If he's teaching gun safety, he should've known that.

I haven't actually looked it up yet, but I was told over the weekend there was an attempted home invasion robbery in Iowa. The bad guy grabbed a girl in the house, but her brother ran and got a shotgun. The noise from sliding the bolt (or whatever he did), scared the robber and he ran out. How awesome is that? I don't suppose they make a purple shotgun with very little recoil, huh?
