A few Q's - Would appreciate some insight

Post by SMC »

First off, thanx in advance for any help.

Ok, I have a WCM I'm nearly done making raceable. Will be track testing this weekend, but so far, the parking lots are being terrorized successfully. U can find it in the projects section - New Member WCM...

1)
Best cost-vs-performance for 6 bolt wheels? For my 1:4 WCM GN?
Where to buy?

2)
I have been offered a newer WCM (Newer than my first)
Rolling Chassis - short a set of wheels.
Close to the same as my current one, but newer rear end design...
Wondering what a ballpark figure is for value. I know it's hard to say without seeing and knowing exactly what it is.
But it has all new wearable parts (Heims, bearings&hubs, etc)
I can score it for under $200
Guy has good used engines with clutches and gear for $150
add a set of wheels and a radio and I'd be in business on a second ride :)
Worth it???

3)
Also, has anyone aluminum welded broken parts with success?
I snapped the top mounting tab off a spindle for my WCM.
The part the upper and lower arms hold, axle and steering arm bolt through it.
I drilled and tapped at the center, but that is only temporary.
I snapped the original upper mounting position right off through the centerline of the bolt hole.
I would build it back up, grind it, drill it, tap it, but wondering if that will be reliable or not.
The obvious answer is buy a replacement... and I intend to, but in the meantime, and even after- for a spare- wondering if this would fly.

Kinda new to the game here guys. I've welded aluminum before, but not for anything critical. Only cosmetic... or stuff that is not under as much load as this thin ear would be under.

4)
Will 1/2" Aluminum Rod Stock from the hardware store suffice for axle stock?

Thanx

1)
BRP is really the only and best option.

2)
thats a steal for under $200!

3)
i have tried to weld aluminum, but cant. I think you could make that part pretty easy from scratch.

4)
It will work, but you will probably need to beat it through the bearings. Centerless ground is the best, but there are other options. There is a topic about this in the tips and tricks section.

Good luck. Car is looking great!

1) Check...

2) Uh Oh... I'll Own it Saturday or Sunday :) #2 inside 2 weeks :)

3) Hmm. My buddy has a real nice welder we've used in the past. And after thinking about this, we did do a cracked bell housing on a tranny once a few years back and all was well. I think I'll make a some from scratch, just to do it, but also repair this one so I have it. I can't stand throwing away parts :) Also, I am swapping these out for a newer syle and scoring better steering.... but again, gotta have em around :)

4) Grabbed a 4' chunk, slides right in.... seems kinda light.... At least it'll be easy to pull out if it's garbage :) Gonna go score some better stuff tonight tho.... and I might just shwoop up on the other car at the same time :) God help me....
